For dot com domain or dot net domain names, there is no way to get it from free domain hosting. But before buying a domain, remember that most of hosting companies also provides domain registration for free if you sign up for one of their hosting plan. So have a look at these alternatives as well.
Why a premium domain registrar
Depending on your need, you might prefer a separate hosting and domain provider. A specialized domain provider would normally be able to handle selling back a domain that you have bought (usually called reseller), covering up your who is information (registrant name that will appear if somebody look up the registration information of the domain), email account on your domain and even as far as selling you other extensions (dot biz, dot info, dot org, etc.) that your domain might have with a very low price as a package.
Domain registrars I found that come with low prices and great deals are godaddy and namecheap. Both offer a lot of enhancement to the standard domain name purchase (as covered above) for a low price of around 4 dollars to 10 dollars a month. You could even bid for a taken domain name if the particular domain really interests you. Furthermore, there are a lot of coupons available for you to choose before payment; just head over to google and look for "godaddy coupon" or "domaincheap coupon". And even better, if you sign up to their newsletter, they will also update you on every promotion that they currently have. Have fun registering your domain!!
